Friday 9/12 and Following Week

Tomorrow 9/12 is the field trip to the Indian Arts Museum. Please bring your own lunch and a jacket. You will be outside for a significant amount of time.

Tuesday 9/16 is Open House at the middle school. Come at 6:30 and follow your schedule in 10 minute increments. Students and parents encouraged to attend!

Monday 9/15 - Discuss research topic options with regard to student interest and available resources. Text resources will be in the classroom from the media center to help students make a topic choice. Then, we complete regional/tribal jigsaw and maps in class.

Tuesday 9/16 - First day of research in the Media Center. Media Center staff demonstrate how to access our online catalog media, such as United Streaming. Students begin to find quality source material and take notes using a variety of provided note organizers. Goals - To find and begin documenting 1 non-internet source. To develop 2 questions that will guide research and thesis statement.

Wednesday 9/17 - This is Constitution Day. As recipients of federal grant money, we are obligated to teach a lesson regarding the founding document. This year, students will investigate student civil rights inside of public schools with regard to five Supreme Court cases. (A formal Constitution Unit follows later in the school year.)
Those who have not finished their regional tribal organizers and maps will have class time to do so.

Thursday 9/18 - We are back in the media center in full research mode! Since student notes and note-taking skills are evaluated, students are given a packet with a variety of note-taking organizers to guide them. Students are required to use these organizers.

Friday: Quiz - Geographic and Climatic regions will be labeled on a map, and tribes/lifestyles are placed within the regions. Please study using your map and organizers!! We are in the media center next Mon., Wed., and Fri. -- Please bring research materials:)

Week of September 8th

General Announcements:

1. Student pictures on Tuesday morning. Please bring in money/forms. Students hand forms personally to photographers. Photos to be taken in 1st 2 periods for 8th grade.

2. Field trip to Colter Bay Indian Arts Museum on Friday as part of American Indian unit. Students: Please bring a lunch and warm clothes for eating outside.If you can't get a lunch, please tell your History teacher before Friday:)


Class This Week:

Monday: Finish Presidential Candidate Website Critique in class. Review Paleo-Indian vocab for quiz tomorrow.

Tuesday: Quiz: Students use unit vocab to write 1-2 paragraphs describing how and when 1st Americans migrated here. Advanced work will compare various competing theories.
Then - Compare/Contrast - Maya/Aztec cultures. Slides from Mesoamerica. Students read supplemental texts.

Wednesday: Identify major geographic regions of the US, and begin to link modern American Indian groups with the regions. We begin locally with Plains Indians.
HW: Read and develop 5 questions: "The Sioux Today - Life on the Pine Ridge Reservation"

Thursday: Continue to identify tribal groups with their geographic regions. How did their geography influence their way of life? Students choose 2 regions (besides Great Plains Indians) and jigsaw with the whole class.

Friday: Field Trip: Colter Bay Indian Museum.
