Parent-Teacher Conferences Nov 6th & 7th

Parents with students in my homebase (5th Hour class) can call or e-mail to set up a time slot. A form was sent home this week. You can send it back instead of calling or e-mailing. If the time you indicate on the form is taken, I will send it back home with a list of open times.

All parents/guardians of all my students can set up an appointment also. Protocol has been that homebase classes do so first.

Times are 3:00 - 7:00pm on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Last Week of Quarter 1

Points of Interest:

Congrats! The vast majority of students handed in the result of weeks of work on Friday. I am reading and assessing the research papers this week in order to have the grades in by Friday.

Dance on Friday: Parent volunteers are encouraged! Contact me via e-mail or school phone.

Weird Hair day on Wednesday: Hair must be done before coming to school due to allergens let off by hairspray etc. No costumes please by admin. request.

Monday Oct 29th -- Today: Introduction to Jamestown: Looking at the text and supplemental periodical materials, students will examine the who, when, why and where of the Jamestown Settlement. Students' main activity will be a jigsawed read-aloud, where groups of students read a section, discuss and take notes. Then representatives of each group meet and share what they've read.

HW: Finish notes not gotten during the jigsaw exercise. Section 1 - p. 70-73. Please use organizer from class.

Tuesday Oct. 30th -- Students examine stark challenges faced by the settlers in Jamestown, specifically the "Starving Time".
A grim and somewhat gruesome account of the starving time is read as an introductory activity. A short video clip from Discovery's "United Streaming" will be shown regrading challenges of Jamestown settlement. Students will then complete a vocabulary intensive description of the human suffering experienced by settlers at Jamestown. This is supplemental material from Junior Scholastic.

Wednesday (Halloween): Today we will identify the origins of Halloween and discuss the face of this holiday in the US. In addition, students will be reading/watching and discussing the start of the slave trade at Jamestown. No HW - The end of the quarter is upon us.

Thursday and Friday: Attention will be refocused on the New England colonies! Graded research papers will be returned and students will see their final Q1 grades. (Those papers that have been graded, are entered into Powergrade).

Stay tuned for further updates!
